The total population of China hits 1,299,880,000 in the end of 2004, 337,290,000 growth compared with that in 1978, in which 542,830,000 in cities and towns, accounting for 41.76% of the total with 370,380,000 actual growth compared with that in 1978; and 757,050,000 in rural areas, accounting for 58.24% of the total with 33,090,000 actual reduction compared with that in 1978.
