Research For Influence of Urbanization and Industrialization On Farmland throughput and Its Countermeasures in China

This research is a collaborative project between the Institute of China Land Surveying and Planning and the American Lincoln Land Policy Research Center and will take place between May 2005 and May 2007 Its key objective is to conduct research into the influence of urbanization and industrialization on farmland throughput from macroscopical and typical casesand to analyze the impact of different aspects of urbanization and industrialization on China′s grain securityBased on thisoptimal policies of farmland preservation will be suggested and a proposal for sustainable cities and industrial development will be made

The main contents of this project include1.Quantitative evaluation of the influence of urbanization and industrialization on farmland throughput over the last 10 yearsWith reference to research findings of population carrying capacity of land in China the following work will be conductedto estimate the losses of farmland throughput caused by urbanization and industrialization, and to analyze the overall influence of urban and industrial land expansion on China’s grain security over the last 10 years 2. Research into stimulating mechanism and reasonable mode of urban land growth. Two or three cities will be selected. Through survey and analysis, the profound analysis will be given to inherent stimulation and external factor of urban land growth. The quantitative relationship will be established between urban land growth and factors of population, economy and policy etc.. 3. Research into farmland preservation and rapid urbanization and industrialization. On the foundation of system analysis for influence of urbanization and industrialization on farmland throughput for recent 10 years together with stimulating mechanism and reasonable mode of urban land growth work will be done to fix the amount of influence of urbanization and industrialization on farmland throughput and grain security in different situations. Urbanization and industrialization will be approached to ensure China′s grain security and to suggest the farmland protective policy and methods analysis for reference of the government.

The results achieved contain1. First hand information has been obtained through field investigations and research in the cities of Kunshan and Shijiazhuang, 2. Econometrics study on urban expansion and its effects completed with the cooperation of Nanjing University, Hebei Agricultural University and the American Lincoln Research Centre. In addition, the analysis of the influence of urban expansion on grain production has been explored from the perspective of economics
